My Philosophy
Whether we talk about personal branding, corporate brands or image, it all comes down to reputation. Reputations can be created based on how you handle yourself, how honest you are, your attitude, your integrity; basically what you are known for. All of this comes from your personal philosophy.
My philosophy towards my family, my friends, my coworkers and my clients is to be someone that they can turn to, someone they can count on and to be there. I believe strongly that we must deliver, whether it’s as simple as doing what we said we’d do, to going above and beyond expectations to truly solve a problem.
I love what I do – it’s fun, I get to work with great people, I get to share knowledge about often elusive and ever changing topics like search engine marketing, website development and social media. I get to help people understand the right information so that they won’t be taken advantage of by someone who makes promises larger than they could ever deliver.
To my family, I’m always there – if my brother has to work late and needs help picking up the kids from school, he can count on me. I try really hard not to say “no” very much. (My son loves that!) He’s the apple of my eye, center of my attention and a breath of fresh are all in one. He’s only five now, but as he learns more about our world, I want him to have a good attitude toward others, and good manners. (Heck, doesn’t any Mom?)
It’s not so much what we say, it’s how we act and what we deliver. My son watches me, even listens to my phone conversations (it’s funny to hear him repeat some of my conversations with his stuffed animals or tub toys), but he learns by example. My coworkers and my customers see the same me – that I believe in what I do, how our company approaches their business and my genuine interest in their success.
I sometimes struggle with where to draw the line, I always want to do more! Imagine if more of us in this world did what we said we’d do, a little more often. If we worked a little later, put in that something extra at home, imagine how refreshing life would be. I value honesty, personality and being real, and I give that in everything I do.
How much of a difference would it be if we were greeted differently by cashiers, customer service reps and our vendors a little more genuinely? Like the hotel front desk staff who greets us with “next,” “checking in?” or “how can I help you?” What if, they dug a little deeper and empathized with weary travelers? For example, “welcome, looks like you’ve had a long day of travel, could I offer you a cup of coffee while we get you registered.” It’s not much, but these things make a huge difference to customers.
I’m always trying to solve things. While I’m listening to friends share their problems with me, I’m trying to think of what or who I know to help them solve it. I like to provide solutions for things, especially for my clients. If I can’t help them immediately, I find a way, or create another approach to the task at hand.
So, that’s my philosophy – work hard, deliver more than what people expect and be there. What’s your philosophy towards your life? Your work?
